The Room is a B2B SaaS platform in which brands and social media marketers connect with each other over mutually beneficial partnerships. It is a contra economy where success is based on collaboration and not on commercial terms.

This authenticity and integrity is as much a part of our culture as it is of our product, and our ethos of ‘good people, good brands, good conversations’ is central to how we conduct ourselves inwardly as a team as well as externally as a business.

In The Room, brands swap campaigns, products and experiences in exchange for media generated by influential people. Over the last three years, we’ve connected thousands of UK companies and influencers through our online B2B marketplace.

But that’s just the story so far. We’ve raised funding to build the next generation of our technology and open up The Room to a global audience — and we need you to help us get there. It’s a rare opportunity to work on a fresh, new project in a business with a proven model.

The Role:

It’s an exciting time to join The Room. We are scaling rapidly and hiring inspiring, thoughtful and motivated people to push us forward. 

We’re looking for a talented Lead Software Engineer to work closely with our CTO (ex-eBay) to design, build and deliver our new platform using Ruby on Rails, React and PostgreSQL. The Room aspires to create a robust, scalable, high-performing tech product. Your role and attitude will be vital to the platform’s success.

We’d like to hear from you if:

• You’ve previously worked in a startup/scale-up environment, possibly leading small teams as a tech lead, principal engineer or similar.
• You’ve curated robust, scalable, API-driven architectures on AWS and you know what good looks like.
• You’re experienced working with Ruby on Rails, JavaScript (Node), React and PostgreSQL. These are the core technologies we use and expect to continue using.
• You’ve innovated with emerging frameworks and trends, but have a healthy respect for solid, time-tested technologies.
• You’ll strongly contribute to technology decisions.
• Your written and verbal communication is clear and concise. You will be working with people across the business and our customers to better understand how to develop the right product.
• You’ll prioritise performance, security and quality in everything you do, encouraging and mentoring other engineers on best practices.
• You’ll ensure healthy test coverage and push for high standards from others in code reviews.
• You’ll combine strong judgment with a flexible approach and an open mind.
• You’re keen to play a key role in selecting, interviewing and evaluating new team members.
• You’ll be motivated by helping us to hire diverse, curious, friendly and technically strong people to work with you.

How we work:

We’re currently 18 people working from home/remote. At present, we work remote. We do not have an office but we plan to open one in the future. Once we are settled, we like for you to come into a London office a few times a month, and you’ll have the flexibility to work as you wish on the other days. We believe in flexible working to support your commitments so you can work when and how you work best.
